This basement bar, just off the Strand and Fleet Street, used to be a standalone bar and brewhouse but following the takeover of City Pub Co by Young's, this is now a beer hall and part of Daly's Wine Bar upstairs. A separate street entrance, further down the street than the main wine bar entrance, has been kept.
A dozen or so chilled keg beers are on draught plus two or three cask ales. The food offering is "hearty, shareable plates bursting with bold, satisfying flavours, perfectly paired with our wide-ranging selection of ice-cold beers".
The previous rather grungy seating and vibe have been maintained in the makeover.
Historic Interest
The area was formerly Essex House and its grounds, and re-developed in the 1670s and 1680s by entrepreneur Nicholas Barbon. Little from that era survives, with embankment and building in subsequent centuries. Note though that the basement is said to be the original street level.
This Pub serves 1 changing beer and 2 regular beers.
