Hidden away down a short alley opposite Canadian Avenue, this historic building previously housed the local Conservative Club and then, after remaining closed for around 20 years, partly reopened as the Catford Constitutional pub from 2013-2019. Following a subsequent conservation and refurbishment project, the venue reopened once again in mid-Nov 2025 as a pub and community hub. The main bar area is spacious and open plan, with exposed brickwork and an eclectic mix of tables and seating. There are a number of additional rooms/areas on the ground and upper floors, including the adjoining former Georgian farmhouse with its new internal wooden support structure. Most of the rooms are/will be available for hire, including a community kitchen. Food is not currently served but there are plans to install a kitchen in the near future. There are six handpumps on the bar, intended to offer a regular beer from Portobello Brewing along with a guest beer(s).
Historic Interest
The property has a mix of architectural styles/features, comprising Georgian and Victorian buildings plus a 1950s extension. The, locally-listed, Georgian former Elmwood farmhouse dates from 1736 and is believed to be the oldest remaining building in Catford. It is one of only a handful of surviving properties in Lewisham borough with an M-shaped roof profile typical of farmhouses of the Georgian period. The late Victorian addition consists of a two-storey wing and a single storey large hall. From around the early 20th century until the mid-1990s the property housed the Catford Conservative Club. Having then remained vacant for an extended period, the Georgian part in particular fell into serious disrepair. In 2013 the other parts of the property were reopened as a pub, known as the Catford Constitutional Club, until its closure in 2019. In 2021 planning permission was granted for a multi-ÂŁmillion renovation and refurbishment of the whole property, as part of a wider town centre regeneration framework. The outer shell of the Georgian building was retained and repaired, with a new internal timber support structure inserted, resulting in the loss of most of the original interior. The remaining elements of the property were refurbished without material alterations being undertaken.
