General Election 2017 - Pledge for Pubs!
Ahead of the General Election on Thursday 8th June, CAMRA asked election candidates to pledge their support for beer and pubs by committing to:
1. Beer: Celebrate and promote Britain's 1,540 breweries
2. Pubs: Support action to help pubs thrive
3. Consumers: Represent the interests of pub goers, beer and cider drinkers
In total, 773 candidates signed up to our #pledgeforpubs and 130 of them were elected! You can download the list of elected MPs who supported CAMRA's pledges here.
We'd like to say a big thanks to all of the candidates who added their support, and all the CAMRA members who joined in the campaign.
Tim Farron, leader of the Liberal Democrats, supports CAMRA campaign
The leader of the Liberal Democrats has said he is ‘proud to support' CAMRA's campaign to protect beer and pubs.
In a statement to CAMRA, Tim Farron referenced a Manifesto commitment to reviewing the business rates system and recognition of the importance of community pubs.
The statement in full, said:
Thank you for contacting me about CAMRA's campaign to promote beer and pubs. Pubs are at the heart of so many of our communities, particularly in rural areas, and it is vital that we support them and allow them to thrive.
Liberal Democrats have consistently championed the importance of community pubs. I am proud of the work of my Liberal Democrat colleague Greg Mulholland, who fought for legislation to allow pub landlords to free themselves from unfair pricing rules by big pub chains, and to enable pubs to be protected in local areas by being listed as assets of community value.
During our time in Government, the Liberal Democrats ensured that the Beer Duty Escalator was stopped and cut the beer duty each year for 3 consecutive years. These measures supported the growth of Britain's breweries.
Our manifesto also contains a clear commitment to reviewing the business rates system so as to lessen the burden on smaller businesses. This would be beneficial for many pubs, and ensure that they can continue to thrive as real community hubs.
That is why I am proud to support CAMRA's campaign and commit to supporting community pubs. In my own constituency I am delighted that we have not only a wealth of excellent pubs, but also a number of superb breweries producing top-quality local beer. I will continue to support and promote them.
CAMRA is asking all election candidates to pledge their support for beer and pubs by committing to celebrate and promote Britain's 1,540 breweries, support action to help pubs thrive and represent the interests of pub goers, beer and cider drinkers. To lobby your local candidates and ask them to make a #pledgeforpubs, visit: http://www.camra.org.uk/pledge
