CAMRA celebrates 30 years of cider at the Great British Beer Festival

CAMRA is celebrating 30 years of cider and perry campaigning with over 100 ciders and perries on offer at this year’s Great British Beer Festival, taking place from 7-11 August at Olympia London.

Over the last three decades, CAMRA’s APPLE Committee has spearheaded the campaign for real cider and perry, by promoting traditional methods for making real cider and perry from fresh apple and pear juice, and never from concentrate. Campaign highlights over the years include:

  • 2016 – The Chancellor announces that the duty exemption for small cider producers would be upheld, helping to ensure the preservation of real cider producers across the UK.

  • 2015 – A petition with over 20,000 signatures is presented to 10 Downing Street asking the Government to reject EU calls for an increased duty on small UK cider producers.

  • 2005 – The first National Cider Pub of the Year is crowned.

  • 1998 – The first Pomona Award is given for outstanding achievements in the promotion of real cider and perry.

  • 1988 – The first National Cider and Perry Championships are held.

Following the largest-ever consultation of its members, CAMRA will include campaigning for real cider and perry into its “DNA” for the first time. This means that increasing the quality, availability and popularity of real cider and perry will be a key objective for the organisation, alongside its campaigning for real ale.

Andrea Briers, Chair of CAMRA’s APPLE Committee says: “We’re incredibly proud to mark three decades of cider and perry campaigning in the same year that it has been recognised as a key component of CAMRA’s core objectives. We look forward to future campaigning successes as we work to secure a prosperous future for cider and perry.”
